A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

At the last trustees' meeting, held by Zoom on the 21st May, the CLEFT trustees agreed to take part in our very own challenge. As we are unable to visit any of the countries where we carry out our important work at the moment, we will instead walk, run or cycle the distance between Central London and Dhaka, Bangladesh via Sulaimania in the Kurdish region of Iraq.

This is a mighty 6,679miles/ 10,748km!

Can it be done!?

Can our supporters get there before us?

If you would like to join the CLEFT Supporters team and take part, we would love to race you there! All you have to do is download the Strava app on your phone, search for and join the CLEFT Supporters Club and then you will be ready to go. Every time you go for a walk, run or cycle, just record it on Strava and we will be able to see the results.

We do realise that this has been a difficult time for everyone so we are not asking for an entry fee to take part. Should you wish to make a small donation or get sponsorship for this event however, please click the donate button below.

GOOD LUCK!!

Team CLEFT - our journey so far

The distance covered this week is updated in real time. We will also be updating our blog with our progress so please follow our journey and see how we are doing.

Walk, cycle or run our way to Bangladesh - 6,482 miles/ 10,432km

UPDATE 22nd June 2020

By Friday 19th June, Team CLEFT had cycled, run and walked the equivalent distance of Central London to Vienna - that's 1,500km. The challenge has motivated one Trustee, Kaye, to increase how often she runs each week from 2 to a regular 4. We're all doing our part though, recording walks long and short because every steps counts and takes us closer to our destination: the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Consultant Plastic surgeon and Trustee, Paul Morris, has also been clocking up some impressive distances on his bike (photographed left with brother Phillip and daughter Harriet who are both in the CLEFT Supporters' Team).

The photo was taken at the start of Saturday's ride which ended up being an amazing 67km around the Cambridgeshire countryside. Well done Paul & family!

Our much smaller CLEFT Supporters Club are also doing incredibly well. This small but impressive team of 4 active members has clocked up a very respectable 833km. They have left Frankfurt and are moving towards Vienna. Considering the size of the team, this is a great achievement. Team CLEFT will have to watch out!

UPDATE 1st July 2020

We have had a few new members join the Supporters Team and they now make up a team of 12. Among them are some cyclists who have been covering some serious distances. Hester has managed the longest single distance of 75.03km on her bike - very impressive! Team CLEFT's top runner sustained a fractured wrist last week whilst out running which has put him out of action for at least 3 weeks.

The latest statistics are:

Team CLEFT

Total distance travelled: 2103km.

Where are they on the map? Just beyond Belgrade, next stop Istanbul.

UPDATE 10th July 2020

Two members of Team CLEFT have now sustained injuries that have taken them out of the competition for a while. What it means is that each team currently has 12 active members but it looks like the Supporters team is going to reach Istanbul first (distance from Central London to Istanbul: 3,043) - they are covering more ground than Team CLEFT at the moment!

The latest statistics are:

Team CLEFT
