Lily St John Student’s Section Deputy and Media Officer and medical student, University of Manchester Expand Hi, my name’s Lily and I’m at the University of Manchester, having spent my pre-clinical years at the University of St Andrews medical school. I am passionate about volunteering and fundraising for CLEFT, as I believe every child born with craniofacial abnormalities deserves an equal opportunity to safe and appropriate medical and surgical care to prevent speech, feeding and societal difficulties. In some children around the world, these congenital deformities allow for easy infection access and put a risk to life. Likewise, the ability for the child to feed with a cleft lip palate can be impossible, again leading to potential mortality. CLEFT sets up sustainable and multidisciplinary teams around the world to give these children the care and surgery they need, whilst researching the latest methods to prevent and treat these. Join our ever growing student ambassador team to help make a difference to these children too!
Mahaveer Sangha Student's Section Chair and medical student, University College London Expand My name is Mahaveer Sangha, I am a medical student from University College London and am currently the chair for the Student’s Section. I originally joined CLEFT in 2017/18 as a Student Ambassador. I think the work CLEFT does is amazing. Without adequate and sustainable treatment, children with cleft lips/palates from less privileged backgrounds often face a life of stigma, social exclusion, and health issues. I joined CLEFT to help the charity, in any small way I could, to end this. I hope that one day no child has to suffer due to a lack of access to sustainable cleft lip/palate care and believe that by working together and raising awareness about this issue, that day will soon come.

Dernas Suhail Lead Student Ambassador and medical student, Hull York Medical School Expand My name is Dernas and I'm very excited to be the Lead for CLEFT Hull York Medical School this year! To be a great lead student ambassador for CLEFT, it will take someone who has passion for global surgery, charity and leadership. I vividly remember it was Mr Kelvin Mizen, lead surgeon for a charity called ‘Facing Africa’, who intrigued me by global surgery during a talk at a conference. I was fascinated by the massive change a single individual had manifested in the treatment of Noma, a condition associated with an incredibly high death rate due to the lack of treatment. Since then, I have actively sought opportunities to get involved in global surgery. Most notably, having recently organised and led a team to a successful fun run in collaboration with Lifebox GSA and The Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Glasgow.
