The annual CLEFT workshop in Egypt takes place in a city that hugs the river Nile on the edge of the Sahara desert in Upper Egypt. Sohag is one of the poorest areas of Egypt, a country already struggling economically. Yet, it is becoming one of the best centres for treating clefts in Egypt.

The CLEFT workshop brings together medical professionals and students from all the disciplines that are vital for patients born with clefts including surgeons, nurses, speech therapists and orthodontists.

The workshop aims to share knowledge and experience so that outcomes for children born with clefts can be improved. Professionals demonstrate operations and procedures to students, and everyone comes together to discuss cases. This highlights the necessity for cooperation between specialties and understand and develop the ongoing process of care needed by children born with clefts.
