1 in 700 babies is born with cleft in the UK. It is the most common birth defect. We don't know why this is the case but we are dedicated to investigating the unanswered questions to help improve outcomes for children born with cleft palate - see our Research section for more information. CLEFT has also been very involved in working with hospitals overseas, supporting local medical teams to provide long-term, sustainable treatment and care for people less privileged born with clefts. Our Overseas section explains further the projects we have supported.
